Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is X-Ray (Radiography)?
X-rays are a form of radiation similar to visible light, but at a much higher energy that is used to create images of body structures. X-rays penetrates through the body and are absorbed differently depending on the different structures or tissues density. The denser a structure, like bone is, the less X-rays it allows to pass through, creating the image to appear whiter on the X-ray. The less dense a structure, like soft tissues are, the more X-rays it allows to pass through, creating the image to appear darker on the X-ray.
  • What are the risks of X-Ray's?
The benefits of X-rays usually outweigh the risks because the radiation exposure is generally very small. X-rays can slightly increase the risk of developing cancer later in life based on the amount of radiation exposure and the number of procedures a patient may receive. However, it's important to be aware of the risks and take precautions, such as: • Inform the doctor if you are pregnant • Wear loose comfortable clothing, removing all jewelry. • Avoid wearing clothing with metal such as: zippers, buttons and pins.
  • What does A.L.A.R.A stand for?
As low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) is the basic guiding principle of radiation protection. When using ionizing radiation, exposure should be as low as reasonably achievable while still maintaining a suitable image quality for diagnosis. Avoid exposure that does not have direct benefit to you.
